Will the McDonald's smoothie line cross the Atlantic?

August 10, 2010

The McDonald's McCafe Real Fruit Smoothie line buoyed the company's global sales by 7 percent in July, and now some analysts are speculating that the success could translate into a launch in the United Kingdom.

The U.K.'s Marketing Week explored the possibility of the smoothie's import to the country, but a McDonald's spokesperson ruled it out within the next year.

For about three years, the UK has been trialing smaller versions of the U.S. products, called "Innocent Smoothies," which are included in Happy Meals.

McDonald's sales were up 5.3 percent in Europe in July, with coffee providing the largest catalyst. It was the second busiest month on record for the chain's U.K. stores.
