Would you like fries with your Mutton Whopper?

October 31, 2014

Burger King has dropped beef and pork products from its menu in India in deference to the beliefs of the country's sizable Hindu and Muslim populations, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In the place of those proteins, diners will find Whoppers made from chicken, mutton and vegetables.

Other quick service chains have taken a similar approach and altered their menus when entering the Indian market. McDonald's offers a potato burger called the McAloo Tikki and a beef-free version of the Big Mac called the Maharaja Mac. It's also opened a vegetarian-only outlet in northern Indian. Dominos and Subway have also altered their menus to serve vegetarian and spicier options.

Burger King won't confirm local media reports of plans to open at least 12 new Burger King restaurants in cities across India over the next twelve months. Burger King's partner in the region is Everstone Capital Advisors.
