August 4, 2009
Yum! Brands Inc. has received the "Innovative Program Award" from the Employee Services Management (ESM) Association's Awards of Excellence Program for its 2008 Earth Week program that reinforced the importance of sustainability and the environment.
ESM Association, a national nonprofit for employee services providers, evaluated their members' 2008 programs and made its selection based on criteria such as program innovation, creativity, employee feedback and results. Yum! Brands' Earth Week Program was selected because of the program's innovation and creativity.
The company launched Earth Week in 2008 to highlight its sustainability practices and educate employees about actions they can take professionally and personally to reduce their environmental impact. Earth Week debutedsimultaneously at the company's restaurant support centers in Louisville, Ky., Dallas and Irvine, Calif.
The program included:
- Daily informational e-mails promoting awareness of the company's environmental actions
- Trivia contest and corporate services Web site detailing Yum!'s green initiatives and green tips for work and home
- A unified recycling system, including under-desk recycling bins for employees
- Educational opportunities such as "Lunch and Learn" sessions and a green teleconference to educate employees about restaurant sustainable actions
For the past several years, Yum! Brands has been recognized by the ESM Association for employee programs and was "Employer of the Year" in 2008.
Yum! Brands launched its Earth Week program for Restaurant Support Center employees in conjunction with the company's focus on corporate responsibility. The company issued its first Corporate Responsibility Report titled "Serving the World" during the fourth quarter of 2008. The report examines Yum! Brands' social, environmental and economic impact based on company and external stakeholder expectations and can be accessed on the company's Web site.
