CNN:Yum Brands Inc. has said Tuesday that Taco Bell, its leading domestic chain, is "starting to turn the corner." The concept was hit by a food-safety issue in the Northeast and a widely publicized rodent episode in New York City, which hurt the brand's nationwide results in 2007. In the fourth quarter, Taco Bell sales were flat from a year earlier.
The company also is working on near-term plans to give its KFC unit a "more youthful, contemporary image." Longer-term, non-fried chicken products will be the centerpiece of the brand's transformation, expected to begin in 2009.
