Wendy’s bringing back its pretzel bun

June 18, 2014

Wendy’s announced it is bringing back its pretzel bun in July, with the return of its pretzel bacon cheeseburger and pretzel pub chicken sandwiches.

CMO Craig Bahner said in a news release that the pretzel bun was well received by consumers last year, and a cornerstone of the brand’s menu innovation.

When the pretzel bun made its debut last summer, Bahner called it the brand’s most anticipated new product. More than 50 million pretzel sandwiches were sold at Wendy’s last year. In addition, according to the company, the pretzel bun sandwiches drove a more than 3 percent increase in same-store sales in the third and fourth quarters.

The pretzel bacon cheeseburger and pretzel pub chicken both feature an artisan-style pretzel bun made using the same process as traditional soft pretzels.

The cheeseburger includes a warm cheddar cheese sauce, Applewood smoked bacon and smoky honey mustard. It is garnished with a slice of cheddar cheese, sliced red onions, tomato and spring mix.

The chicken sandwich includes Muenster cheese, sweet and savory honey mustard and a warm cheddar cheese sauce, with a lightly breaded all-white meat chicken breast topped with tomatoes and spring mix.

“Our premium sandwiches featuring the pretzel bun deliver fast casual experience at fast food prices,” Bahner said. “They are excellent examples of our menu innovation and an important part of Wendy’s brand transformation that also includes the re-imaging of Wendy’s restaurants with a bold, contemporary look; an updated logo; new crew uniforms and consumer-preferred menuboards and packaging.”

Both sandwiches will be available for a limited time for the recommended price of $4.99 (cheeseburger) and $5.09 (chicken).
