Burger King said today it is launching a "green packaging" pilot program focused on eight of its most-used, guest-facing items, including forks, spoons, knives, straws, drink lids, fry pods, Whopper wrappers and napkins, according to a news release.
As part of the program, the more environmentally-friendly packaging will be tested in 51 company-owned restaurants in Miami. The packaging uses alternative materials, such as fry pods made with renewable unbleached virgin paperboard, cutlery made with the plant-based plastic known as cPLA, and napkins made with 100% recycled fiber.
By piloting solutions in restaurants, the brand said it can get direct feedback from guests on how the packages perform and make the changes needed with its supplier, while building an implementation road map for the system. Upon completion of the pilot test, Burger King will take what it learns from the tests, along with guest feedback and use it to inform plans for nationwide sustainable packaging in the next year, according to the press release.
Burger King is based in Miami and has approximately 17,800 stores worldwide.
