This year marks the 10th anniversary of Burger King's Subservient Chicken marketing campaign, and the brand has brought him back for the occasion.
According to a news release, Subservient Chicken will be featured in a digital short film to mark the launch of the new Chicken Big King Sandwich. When he first appeared in 2004, he followed user commands in real time and became an Internet sensation with hundreds of millions of online views.
"It's the 10-year anniversary, and we want to celebrate our new Chicken Big King Sandwich, truly in epic fashion," CMO Eric Hirschhorn said in the release. "This sandwich is a big deal, so it felt fitting to partner with the Subservient Chicken, who is a pop-culture icon."
The Burger King long-format journalistic piece chronicles what happens to Internet sensations when their 15 minutes of fame are over. The film, titled "Burger King Chicken Redemption," also features a cameo by actor Dustin Diamond. The film will begin airing today on subservientchicken.com and will be supported by other creatives.
Fundraiser launched across U.S. system
Also, the Burger King McLamore Foundation has launched its 2014 Spring Fundraiser across the chain's U.S. system. It will be held now through May 31.
According to a news release, for each $1 donation made at a Burger King restaurant, guests will receive two free product offerings — a soft serve cone and a value-sized classic French fry or onion ring order.
The fundraiser will go toward the McLamore Foundation to help raise money for college scholarships. The McLamore Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Burger King system.
