Dunkin' Donuts is kicking off the new year by removing artificial dye from its doughnuts. The company said in a news release, however, that it will be hard for customers to detect the difference in the appearance of the brand's offerings.
"Eliminating artificial dyes from our donuts is an incredible milestone moment for a fun brand whose products are synonymous with bright, colorful confections," CMO Tony Weisman, said in the release. "After years of research and development, we are thrilled to be taking such a big step in providing guests with simpler ingredients while still delivering the delicious taste and vivid colors expected with our donuts."
The brand has also created a new Snow Flurries Donut and made a pledge to be totally free of artificial dyes across its menu, by year's end.
Dunkin' Donuts' sister brand, Baskin-Robbins, will also remove synthetic dyes from its menu, including ice cream sold both at its restaurants and in quarts and pints at retail locations, as well as those in its syrups, sauces, sprinkles and beverages.
Baskin-Robbins, however, will take a longer period of time to find replacements for the decorative elements on its ice cream cakes, according to the release.
