Dunkin' Donuts jumped into the mobile ordering game with both feet this week, announcing that customers who are members of its DD Perks Rewards program nationally can now order, pay and skip the line via a mobile app. In fact, the new On-the-Go app lets users place orders up to 24 hours in advance for pick up at the location of their choice, according to a news release.
The technology allows users to not only pay in advance, but bypass the line that sometimes awaits when they arrive to pick up orders. Through the app, customers notify restaurant staff they are on site and then retrieve their order without standing in line. And, for those who are a little groggy when retrieving their morning coffee, the app allows customers to save their usual order and repeat it without much more than the touch of a virtual button.
The new version of the app is listed as "New Dunkin' Donuts" in the App Store or Google Play Store. The updated platform has a touch-friendly design with one-tap ordering and visual menus. The app also allows users to access their DD Perks account for coupons, incentives, point-tracking and other features like locating the nearest Dunkin' Donuts location and providing nutritional information.
"On-the-Go ordering represents one of Dunkin' Donuts' most exciting and important advances," said Dunkin' Donuts Vice President of Digital Marketing and Innovation Sherrill Kaplan. "We have achieved an entirely new level of speed and convenience we can offer our busy, on-the-go DD Perks members. For the millions of people who depend on Dunkin' coffee, beverages, baked goods and sandwiches to keep on running, the opportunity to skip the line in store and get back to their busy day even faster than before is a tremendous advantage and a significant differentiator for our brand."
The company has been testing the app in several markets before this week's nationwide launch. Initial testing took place in Portland, Maine late last year, then expanded into the Boston area this March and into metro New York in April. This week's launch puts the app at the fingertips of customers at more than 8,000 restaurants nationwide.
The chain is launching the on-the-go app with a new integrated marketing campaign centered around Ellen Brennan, the world's fast female wingsuit base-jumper. The campaign features Brennan's jump from a 8,346-foot-high mountaintop in France, past a specially created cliffside Dunkin' Donuts storefront, where Brennan grabbed a small Dunkin' Donuts bag as she traveled approximately 120 miles per hour to her landing.
The 66-year-old chain has earned the No. 1 ranking for customer loyalty in the coffee category by Brand Keys for the past 10 years.
