El Pollo Loco CEO flies the coop for Red Robin job

August 12, 2010

Steve Carley, president and CEO of El Pollo Loco Inc., has submitted his resignation with the company to join Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc., based out of Colorado.

His tenure with the Mexican restaurant chain is up Sept. 12.

While at the helm of El Pollo Loco, Carley took bold actions against the restaurant's competition, namely, challenging KFC to a grilled chicken taste test in 2009. He also oversaw the introduction of sirloin steak to the menu and replaced Donald Trump on an episode of The Apprentice.

Steve Sather, El Pollo Loco's senior vice president of operations, will asume the role of acting president and CEO.

Sather joined El Pollo Loco in 2006. Prior, he was senior vice president of retail operations for Great Circle Family Foods LLC, a franchise operator of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in California. He also has worked as COO for Rubio's Restaurants, and held senior management positions with Rally's Hamburgers, La Salsa Holding Company and Taco Bell.

“Steve Sather’s passion for our brand, restaurant leadership experience and strategic acumen will provide El Pollo Loco strong and effective leadership,” Carley said.
