Expert questions QSR internal-network security

August 6, 2009

Evan Schuman and Fred J. Aun recently posted a story on theStorefront Backtalk blogthat has gained national attention, including a post on CBSNews.com. The blog details how security consultant Rick Lawhorn discovered what he determined were internal network security issues when he went through the drive-thru of a local Virginia quick-service restaurant. Lawhorn was about to place an order when the screen showed an internal network screen, including the system's boot count, permanent run time, an IP address, IP Mask and Gateway number.

The blog details a variety of potential implications for quick-service network security because of the system glitch. A comment post from Dennis Davidson, which was not included in the CBSNews.com, disputes a number of assumptions in the blog, including that no broad opinions can be made about data security based on information presented in the blog.
