GrubHub partners with Foursquare, picks top dishes in 5 major metros

February 13, 2018

Just a week after announcing a partnership with Yum Brands to deliver Taco Bell and KFC nationally, GrubHub is expanding its partnership with Foursquare, according to a press release.

Foursquare City Guide users in the U.S. can now order from more than 57,000 local Grubhub restaurants in Foursquare online and mobile listings. Diners browsing the Foursquare guide can click "order now" buttons that redirect to the GrubHub ordering platform.

"Foursquare City Guide is all about delighting users by suggesting new restaurants and providing rich information like photos, tips and ratings to help them find the best experiences, whether at home or abroad," Foursquare Senior Director of Consumer Products Marissa Chacko said in the release. "But every good explorer needs a night in. Adding Grubhub directly into the app makes it easier for our community to take a night off, while still enjoying the best local restaurants they can find."

The partnership has already produced some interesting results: The two online services crunched their combined data to identify local favorites among restaurants and menu offerings. Grubhub came up with the most-ordered dishes, while Foursquare located top restaurants offering these favorites.

Here are some of their findings:

  • New York — bagel and cream cheese from Ess-a-Bagel
  • Chicago — cheese curds from Bangers & Lace
  • San Francisco — shrimp dumplings from Kingdom of Dumpling
  • Los Angeles — poke bowl from Sweetfin Poke
  • Miami — Cuban sandwich from La Carreta

Grubhub used a timeframe of Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2017, for its data. Foursquare analysts found the restaurants with the highest affinity score and rating for the top dishes in each city.
