Half of US Subways to get new look by next year

July 11, 2019

Subway said today it intends to remodel some 10,500 U.S. Subway restaurants by the end of 2020, roughly half its presence nationwide. The company said in a news release that a multi-million-dollar grant program will cover about 25% of the redesign costs for franchisees, whose updated locations will join with about 1,400 completed remodels and 900 currently underway worldwide.

"By signing up for the remodel program, the franchise owners are making an investment, and showing their trust in the brand," Subway Chief Development Officer Don Fertman said in the release. "Together, with all that is going on with our global transformation, I'm convinced we are taking this brand to an exciting new level."

Subway's multi-year global transformation focuses on menu and restaurant revamps, as well as better customer service and convenience at the sandwich QSR.

"Franchising works best when franchise brands and franchise business owners succeed together," International Franchise Association Senior Director of Communications Stephen Worley, said in the release. "IFA commends Subway for their efforts to facilitate these renovations, which can benefit franchise owners, their employees, and their customers alike."

Subway announced it would put $80 million into new flavor creations and a more personalized guest experience at the brand, including things like Flavor Stations to customize sandwiches and salads, and Beverage Stations, with expanded drink offerings, which will be in all eligible U.S. restaurants this summer.
