KFC Canada to re-launch the Double Down

May 24, 2011

KFC's Double Down is ready to make a comeback in the Canadian market. The controversial sandwich made its debut for a limited time in the fall of 2010, and will reappear on menus throughout the country starting June 1 while supplies last.

"Canadians have been craving the premium, meaty, satisfying taste of Double Down for months," said David Vivenes, senior marketing director, Yum! Restaurants Canada, which owns the KFC brand in Canada. "So, we had a word with the Colonel and the wait is finally over."

More than 1 million Double Downs were sold in Canada during the five weeks the sandwich was available, making the item KFC Canada's best-selling new item ever.

The Double Down features two pieces of KFC's famous Original Recipe boneless chicken, two pieces of bacon and processed Pepper Jack cheese and the Colonel's savory, secret sauce.

KFC Canada chefs have trimmed the sodium slightly (by about 10 percent) while still maintaining its trademark taste. Vivenes said the change is part of a company-wide initiative which has reduced sodium levels across the entire KFC menu by an average 20 percent in the past year.

Vivenes added there are still no plans to make Double Down a permanent menu item, as Canadians have indicated that they enjoy it best as a limited time addition to the current options at KFC.

KFC to expand in Peru

Perhaps the Double Down will eventually make its way to Peru. For now, KFC will focus on the expansion of 10 new units in the country, according to Andina.

Locations include Cusco, Chiclayo, Cajamarca and Huancayo. The first, Cusco, will open on June 22.

KFC currently has 58 restaurants in Peru. Forty-eight are located in Lima.
