KFC Canada is taking an unconventional approach to promoting Kwench, its new global beverage menu, with a campaign built around social media "thirst trap" culture, according to an article on Little Black Box.
Created by Toronto-based agency Courage, the "Kwench Traps" campaign features influencers known for attention-grabbing social content, positioning the colorful beverages as accessories and forms of self-expression rather than focusing on traditional marketing messages such as price, flavor or product benefits.
"Culture has made beverages its own kind of accessory, so we thought, 'Why shouldn't KFC?'" Joel Holtby, founder and global co-chief creative officer at Courage, said in the article. "Instead of creating another beverage campaign that talks at people, we wanted people to be a part of it instead."
The campaign targets Gen Z consumers and draws on the growing role beverages play in personal identity and social media culture. Courage Global Chief Strategy Officer and Partner Tom Kenny said drinks have become an accessible way for consumers to express themselves and gain social currency.
The launch also reflects the broader QSR push into beverages as chains look to colorful, customizable and social-media-friendly drinks to drive engagement and additional visits.
