McDonald's a popular search for Blackberry, iPhone owners

October 21, 2009

Recent research into smart-phone users searches by Boston start-up uLocate Communications has found correlations between users of different brands and what they look for in dining and retail, according to a story by Forbes. For example, among those wanting a quick bite, Android and Palm Pre users are more likely to search for Pizza Hut, while iPhone and BlackBerry users prefer McDonald's. Starbucks also is a popular online search for iPhone users.

From Forbes:
Some of the distinctions may be attributable to age or socio-economic differences. ULocate says that iPhone and Android users tend to search for Wal-Mart, while BlackBerry and Pre users favor Best Buy, a more expensive store. Dan Gilmartin, uLocate's vice president of marketing, says the data could point to BlackBerry and Pre users being slightly older than iPhone and Android users.

The iPhone-McDonald's bond could be related to the prevalence of wi-fi in McDonald's restaurants. The same goes for Starbucks. AT&T gives iPhone users free wi-fi access at the coffee chain.
