McDonald's comps rise 4.7%

March 7, 2006

CHICAGO — McDonald's Corp. said Wednesday global comparable sales rose 4.7 percent in February. The Oak Brook, Ill., hamburger giant said it saw positive comparable sales across all geographic segments during the month. For the U.S., comparable sales increased 3.6 percent, helped by the company's new spicy premium chicken sandwich, breakfast menu options and extended hours, according to a news release.

But it was Europe — thanks to robust results in France and Germany — that had the best monthly showing, a 5.4 percent increase in same-store sales compared with last year's 3.4 percent drop.

McDonald's has implemented a number of promotions and new-menu offerings in Europe that mimic successful campaigns in the U.S. While not all of them have worked, Chief Executive Jim Skinner said that the U.K.'s "ongoing emphasis on brand-building initiatives" helped generate positive results in February.

"We remain focused on building momentum across Europe by providing relevant menu selections and everyday value," he said in the sales release.
