Starbucks earned almost $12.7 billion in U.S. sales in 2014, claiming the No. 2 spot for the first time, according to the article. Subway's sales came in at $11.9 billion. And despite a year-long struggle with falling profits, food safety issues and several lawsuits pending, McDonald's easily slid into first with U.S. sales of $35.8 billion in 2014.
