McDonald's Korea has partnered with the National Institute for Lifelong Education to launch an in-person training program for seniors interested in using digital self-ordering services, according to a report from The Korea Times.

NILE developed a guidebook for the program and McDonald's has made its restaurants available for students to practice on using the self-service kiosks. During the class, students learn about the kiosks using a specially-designed smartphone app that simulates the kiosks' interface.

Students also learn basic explanations of terms used in the self-service industry such as QSR, takeout, accumulated points and more. After the class's overview, the students traveled to a nearby McDonald's to apply the concepts they had just learned by using the kiosks to order their lunches.

"I was always afraid of using one of these," a student told the news outlet. "I wanted to try but I couldn't let people behind me wait forever. So I just gave up and left the queue feeling ashamed."

Yang Hyoung-keun, public affairs lead at McDonald's Korea, said that while the industry does a good job of focusing on accessibility, there is much room for improvement in terms of "usability" for people with varying levels of digital literacy.
