McDonald's recalls Happy Meal toy for choking risk

November 11, 2014

McDonald's has recalled about 2.3 million Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop whistles that were included in a Happy Meal and Mighty Kids Meal promotion in October through the first week of November. The whistles were also distributed in the Canadian system.

McDonald's has received two reports of children who coughed out pieces of the whistle that they had sucked into their mouths, including one child who received medical attention. The recall was issued because of the choking and aspiration hazards posed to young children.

The recalled whistles are red and were included in a plastic Hello Kitty figurine holding a pink heart-shaped lollipop. The whistle can be removed and used to make sounds by inhaling or exhaling through the mouthpiece. The figurine measures about 3 inches by 1 ¾ inches. The whistle is about 1 ¾ inches by ¾ inch and features a picture of Hello Kitty on both sides.

Consumers with questions can contact McDonald's at (800) 244-6227.
