McDonald's trimming its waistline

McDonald's will close more stores than open new ones this year.

August 17, 2015

McDonald's is closing more stores than what it will open this year and the related job reductions could signal a troubling trend though the major QSR isn't indicating the trend is longterm.

McDonald's was not immediately available for comment about the change but provided feedback to Bloomberg News.

"In the U.S., we will have a net reduction in restaurants, but the impact is minimal in comparison to the 14,000 restaurants we operate across the country," spokeswoman Becca Hary said. "We consistently review our restaurant portfolio and make strategic decisions to better position our business for the future."

The news comes after McDonald's reported a drop in U.S. same store sales, its first in years, and the resignation of CEO Don Thompson in January.
