In February, McDonald's will celebrate the Lunar New Year at the San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival by giving out those traditional lucky red envelopes, containing coupons for free coffee, a news release said. The festival, on Feb. 8 and 9 in the California city, is part of the celebration around the two-week Lunar New Year holiday season.

As part of that season, red envelopes are traditionally filled with money and given out as gifts. The largest holiday celebrated by Asians worldwide, Lunar New Year marks the start of the lunar calendar and represents new beginnings and good fortunes.

McDonald's said that because Asian Americans are the largest growing ethnic segment in the U.S. currently, it joined other brands, like Panda Express, which also said it is distributing red envelopes to celebrate the holiday.
