New York City Council is considering a first-of-its-kind measure referred to as "just cause" legislation that would prohibit QSRs from terminating or significantly reducing the hours of employees without both a stated reason and an opportunity to correct the problem before being fired. City ouncil members Brad Lander and Adrienne Adams introduced the legislation, according to an article in Civil Eats.
The president of fast food worker employment rights organization, Fast Food Justice, Tsedeye Gebreselassie told the publication that many QSR workers were let go without any provided reason, and the New York City measure could be the beginning of something that spreads nationally.
"The legislation the New York City Council is considering the first of its kind in the country for the fast-food industry, but it could become a model for other cities and industries that want to enshrine fairness and dignity for workers and ensure they are only fired when there's a reason that warrants it," she told Civil Eats.
The New York City Council will likely vote on the bill during the summer.
