Sonic Drive-In has committed to Limeades for Learning for the second year. The initiative directs more than $500,000 in grants to public school teachers nationwide through Sonic's partnership with donorschoose.org.
To participate in the program, consumers can vote for a teacher's project online at limeadesforlearning.com. If 1 million votes or more are cast for the project by Sept. 30, Sonic will donate an additional $100,000.
Teacher projects include book and microscope donations, museum field trips, and listening centers. The projects with the most votes each week are awarded grants throughout September.
An interactive map allows voters to view the projects and keep track of the dollars donated. More than 6,000 teacher projects have been requested through the program thus far.
Last year, Sonic and its franchise partners donated more than $635,000 and funded 1,457 teacher projects. By October, Sonic will have donated more than $1 million in learning supplies.
"In its second year, we believe that Limeades for Learning is gaining momentum and anticipate that we will make a difference in even more classrooms than we did in 2009. School districts across the country are challenged to provide materials for their classrooms as they're faced with shrinking budgets. Sonic customers understand this and we want to help in any way we can," said Clifford Hudson, chairman and CEO for Sonic Corp.
