Subway hits 35K units, honors speedy Sandwich Artists

August 21, 2011

Subway Restaurants, which became the largest quick-service chain in the world earlier this year, has hit its 35,000th unit milestone.

According to spokesperson Les Winograd, the restaurant counter ticked in at 35,012 on Friday morning. The announcement comes just days before Subway celebrates its 46th anniversary on Aug. 28.

Fastest "Sub Jammer" Sandwich Artists honored

For the second time in three years, Neenah, Wisc.-based Sandwich Artist Bryon Shea won first place in the annual Sub Jammers competition held at the Subway Convention in San Francisco, by making a footlong submarine sandwich in 46.6 seconds. He also won the competition in 2009.

Shea, who has been an employee at Subway for 10 years, came in second place in 2007 and 2008 and placed third in the 2010 competition.

Sub Jammers are judged on speed, sandwich appearance, content distribution and formula accuracy. Sandwich Artists taking part in the Sub Jammers competition won regional events leading up to the championship round in California.

For winning the competition, which was sponsored by Shamrock Farms and Schreiber Foods, Shea was presented with a check for $3,000.

Mana Dangol, from San Rafael, Calif., was awarded $2,000 for second place. Sharon Hall, of Waco, Texas, received $1,000 for her third place finish. In all, 120 Sandwich Artists from throughout the world competed.

"Sandwich Artists are the cornerstone of the Subway experience," said Tom Coba, chief operations officer for Subway. "They are the people most responsible for creating a memorable experience and great meal for our customers. The Sub Jammers competition is a fun way to showcase one of the things that they do best."
