Subway names top Sandwich Artists

Salvador Rodriguez, from Florence, Ariz., is Subway's new "Sub Jammers" champion, taking first place in a field of about 138 Sandwich Artists from around the world at the brand's recent annual convention in Orlando, Fla.

The Sub Jammer competition judges participants on speed, sandwich appearance, content distribution and formula accuracy. Employees taking part in the competition won regional events leading up to the championship round at Subway's annual convention.

Rodriguez, who won with a score of 51.15, has been with Subway for 13 years.

The next challenge for Rodriguez will be to join a team of other Subway employees, as well as "Famous Fan" Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and other special guests, in New York City Aug. 15 to try and set the Guinness World Record for most sandwiches made at one time.

Joe Chaves, director of Operations for Subway, said the company enjoys the opportunity to highlight the Sandwich Artists, whom he called the "cornerstone of the Subway experience."

"This is certainly one of the most exciting highlights of our annual convention," Chaves said. "And allows us to say 'thanks' for all the hard work the Sandwich Artists do to provide a positive dining experience and outstanding customer care for every customer that walks into a Subway restaurant."

Rodriguez dethroned Bryon Shea, of Neenah, Wisc., who won the competition in 2011 and 2009. Shea, who has been in the Subway system for 11 years and manages two restaurants, finished second this year with a score of 51.6.

For winning the competition, which was sponsored by Schreiber Foods and Ventura Foods LLC, Rodriguez was presented with a check for $3,000. Shea took home the $2,000 second place prize while Jenni Chapman, of Galesville, Wisc., received $1,000 for her third place finish with a score of 52.12. Chapman has been in the Subway system for 16 years.
