Subway tests lower-cal shakes with Halo Top partnership

July 1, 2019

Subway has made a big name for itself as a health- and weight-watching QSR and now it's taking that reputation right into a new territory by offering lower-calorie milkshakes made with Halo Top ice cream so the desserts will only weigh in at about 350 calories or less, or about 150 less than average.

The QSR has said it has exclusively collaborated with Halo Top Creamery to test the hand-spun shakes at nearly 1,000 U.S. Subway locations in six select markets from July 22 through Sept. 4, a news release said. The shakes will come in Vanilla Bean, Chocolate and Strawberry, each with at least 20 grams of protein and 30% of the recommended daily value of calcium. The test market cities include:

  • Colorado Springs, Colorado.
  • Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Longview, Texas.
  • Toledo, Ohio.
  • Tyler, Texas.
  • Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • West Palm Beach, Florida.

"We are passionate about creating delicious new menu items for our guests that can't be found anywhere else," Subway Chief Brand and Innovation Officer Len Van Popering said in the release. "We share Halo Top's values that taste does not need to be sacrificed to create better-for-you options. We are excited to bring this popular brand to our guests in a never-before-seen way that we know they will love."

Halo Top disrupted the ice cream category by offering delicious ice cream with just 280-360 calories and 20 grams of protein per pint.

The brand has been introducing a lot of new items lately, including those with partnerships with other food brands, like King's Hawaiian Bread. In fact, the pace of similar partnerships is quickening across the QSR category, at an array of brands from Auntie Anne's to White Castle.
