Subway turns to Keurig to boost coffee offerings

June 11, 2014

Subway has partnered with Keurig Green Mountain Inc. to bring its single-serve K150 brewers to the sandwich chain’s North American locations. The Keurig K150 brewer will provide freshly brewed coffee on demand for the sandwich chain. Currently, more than half of the Subway restaurants in the U.S. and Canada have added a Keurig system, according to a news release.

“Keurig brewers offer quality and convenience, which are key advantages as Subway restaurants look to provide customers with a consistently high-quality cup of coffee brewed fresh no matter the time of day — not just at breakfast,” John Whoriskey, Keurig’s president, U.S. Sales and Marketing, said in the release.

He added that the brewers will help Subway franchisees simplify operations by eliminating the need to separately brew regular, decaffeinated and flavored coffees. The system will also reduce waste, he said.

Keurig brewers were introduced as an option to Subway franchisees last year. David Zambory, beverage manager for Subway, said the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive about the system’s “ability to deliver variety, quality and freshness on demand.”

“Subway restaurants are a destination throughout the day, including at breakfast, and we look forward to providing our customers with the freshest cup of coffee possible no matter when they visit us,” he said.

NSF certified

The Keurig K150 Series Commercial Brewing System is the first small to medium capacity Keurig brewer to be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation for foodservice use, the release said.

“Until now, innovation in brewed beverages for quick-serve restaurants has been focused on high-volume applications and longer brewed coffee holding times,” Whoriskey said. “Keurig is changing the way Subway restaurants are thinking about brewed beverages by delivering a fresh brewed, delicious beverage at all times during the day to consumers who recognize Keurig as a symbol of quality.”
