Taco Bell is testing a proprietary plant-based protein in Birmingham, Alabama, according to a press release.
The Crispy Melt Taco ($2.49) starts with a freshly fried daily white corn shell tortilla. It's topped with shredded cheddar, mozzarella and Monterey pepper jack cheese and a warm nacho cheese sauce. Customers have their choice of protein. The new plant-based protein is made from a soy and pea protein proprietary blend.
The taco is finished with lettuce, more cheese, diced tomatoes and sour cream.
During this test, the proprietary plant-based protein will also be featured in Nachos BellGrande, and it can be added to any menu item through order customization.
