Did you know the phrase "Taco Tuesday" is trademarked? Taco Bell is on a mission to free "Taco Tuesday" from a small competitor who has owned the trademark since 1989, according to an Axios report.
Taco Bell has announced that it has asked the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to let Taco Tuesday go free from the trademark registration owned by Taco John's, a Wyoming-based competitor, for the last 34 years.
Apparently Taco Tuesday is owned by Taco John's in 49 states, while a restaurant called Gregory's owns it in New Jersey, according to Taco Bell. The brand has filed a petition to have ownership canceled.
"But when a big, bad bully threatens to take away the mark our forefathers originated so many decades ago, well, that just rings hollow to us," Jim Creel, Taco John's CEO, said in s statement. "If 'living más' means filling the pockets of Taco Bell's army of lawyers, we're not interested."
Taco John's has 40 days to file a response to Taco Bell's petition.
