Tim Hortons gets nostalgic for 50th anniversary

May 16, 2014

To kick off its 50th anniversary weekend, Tim Hortons is transforming Toronto's busy Yonge-Dundas Square into a scene from the 1960s by creating a replica of its first restaurant.

"Since our first restaurant opened its doors May 17, 1964, Tim Hortons has become an essential part of Canadians' lives," CEO Marc Caira said in a news release. "We are thanking our loyal guests for making Tim Hortons Canada's favorite coffee by taking them back in time to the very beginning and recreating our first restaurant."

The throwback restaurant will include staff in vintage uniforms, and the celebration will feature Canadian jazz-pop singer Nikki Yanofsky Saturday, who will perform 60s music.

Also in celebration of its anniversary, Tim Hortons is bringing the Éclair back to its menu as part of its #TimsBringItBack campaign. The Éclair received 40 percent of the votes from the campaign, which launched May 1. It will be featured in restaurants later this year for a limited time. Caira said the Bring It Back promotion generated more than 200,000 votes and thousands of comments on the brand’s social media channels.

Finally, all day Saturday, Tim Hortons will offer a free Birthday Cake Donut at participating restaurants across Canada.
