UberEats has added an option in several cities to allow diners to order ahead for their dining in reservations, according to Eater, which said the option — where available — is seen atop the app's screen, aside the options for delivery and pickup.
Eater said an online forum last year among Uber drivers noted the service was "Uber Eats's wet dream, cutting out the drivers completely." Uber confirmed the service started last November and is being tested in Dallas, Austin, Tucson, and San Diego at no fee to diners, but restaurants are charged, depending on the market. Uber said that the cost charged to restaurants is typically lower than that paid for delivery orders.
"We want to enable restaurants to focus on what they're best at — making amazing food and providing top-notch service," Eater quoted an Uber spokesperson saying in a statement. "By allowing customers to order and pay in the app, we streamline the experience for both the customers and the restaurant." There are no plans at this time for a wider rollout.
