Heads up: Here come 92 million Mother's Day revelers

May 12, 2017

If you listen closely you may already hear the thundering herd of Mother's Day diners heading this weekend to restaurants across North America. In fact, two out of every five Americans will dine out this Sunday, according to the National Restaurant Association. About 21 million people will order take out or delivery to celebrate the familial matriarch, according to a survey of about 1,000 adults conducted this May with ORC International.ws release said.

That's about 92 million diners, makingn Mother's Day the nation's most popular holiday for eating out, the NRA said. Likewise, nearly half of the day's diners plan to make either the noon or evening meal their tribute to mom, the NRA survey found.

Additional survey results found that making a date to eat out with mom is most popular this Sunday for kids in the Northeast and Midwest of the nation. As far as which meal moms eat out most on the big day, the survey found that 10 percent of those polled made it breakfast, 25 percent chose brunch, 45 percent will do lunch, and 47 percent will reserve time for dinner with mom. Interestingly, older diners prefer brunch, while families with youngsters in the house narrowly preferred lunch over dinner.

Finally, for most of these moms, the meal itself is the preferred gift, according to the survey. That was followed far behind by preferences for flowers, followed by jewelry, restaurant gift cards clothes and household items. The survey also found that about one-fifth of moms want something other than any of those items.

Nonetheless, come Sunday many moms in the U.S. will actually be working through their big day in order to make it a great day for both their employers and other moms.
