McDonald's beats the heat with heat-sensitive McFlurry vending kiosk

When temperatures soared to record highs in Amsterdam, residents were rewarded with free McFlurries from a vending kiosk.

When the temperature hits over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it is difficult to keep your cool. McDonald's helped provide some cold relief for Amsterdam residents with a heat-activated vending kiosk, designed by outdoor advertising agency JCDecaux, which gave out McFlurries for free.

The kiosk was designed to vend the McFlurries if the temperature rose above the record high of 38.6 degrees Celsius. On July 4, 2015 the heat soared to 38.7 degrees Celsius (101.67 degrees Fahrenheit), and the panel rose up with a sound mimicking a train barricade, allowing anyone to come grab ice cream cups. People swarmed around the kiosk, eager to claim their prize. Residents could then take those empty cups to a local McDonald's to receive free McFlurries.

"While intended as a short promotion for a historically hot day, it seems like JCDecaux and McDonald's could roll this one out further, lowering the temperature slightly to allow people to enjoy the promotion on particularly, rather than just historically, hot days," said Erik Oster, reporter for Ad Week, in hisreport on the promotion.
