A new competitor for food delivery and drive-thru? The Munchery takes a big bite into new service areas

May 19, 2016

Meal delivery service, The Munchery, is expanding in a big way, extending its serviceable market area by more than 700 percent, according to a news release. In fact, this expansion moves the service into the entire West Coast, as well as the Washington, D.C., area.

The company, which centers its services around an item called the "Plaid Box," offers a weekly subscription meal kit featuring original recipes and chef-curated ingredients. Each Plaid Box contains up to three meals for two people and each meal is ready-to-cook and serve in 15 minutes with no prep work.

"Same-day delivery has proven to be a fruitful offering in metro areas and we're happy to announce that we'll be expanding that format to more areas soon,” said Tri Tran, Munchery co-founder and CEO. "At the same time, there's demand for high-quality, convenient meals beyond city centers. Our vertically integrated model enables us to scale diverse formats and offerings to meet the needs of a broader range of lifestyles and demographics. We're aiming to become a default meal option for millions of new customers nationwide."

Specifically, as of this week, the service moves into California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.  And according to the news release, The Munchery is expanding same-day delivery service to Sacramento, San Diego, Portland and Washington, D.C., over the next several weeks. The additional four markets, expand the service area potential for the company from 8 million people to 65 million. This follows the recent launch of a new membership model in same-day delivery areas, which offers new customers discounts for an additional fee. The Munchery's executives tout that by joining the membership program, consumers can get the meals for less than $20 for two people.

The Munchery previously offered its same-day delivery services to people in the metro areas of San Francisco, Seattle, New York City and Los Angeles, as well as schedule-ahead delivery in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Further expansion plans call for the addition of more cities throughout the rest of the year. The company donates one meal to a local food bank for every order placed.
