Arizona McDonald's to host backpack giveaway for schoolchildren

July 24, 2012

McDonald's restaurants throughout greater Phoenix and northern Arizona will host Backpack Saturday at 8 a.m. July 28. During the event, 20,000 backpacks will be given away to help children prepare for school.

The first 100 children who visit their local McDonald's restaurant will receive a free backpack. Backpacks will be given away to school-age children at 200 McDonald's restaurants in Maricopa, La Paz, Mohave, Yavapai, Coconino, Gila, Navajo, Apache, Graham and Pinal counties, Ariz.

The offer excludes Walmart and mall McDonald's restaurant locations.

In addition, 50 McDonald's restaurant locations will host Health & Safety Fairs with state/county/city community service organizations providing health screenings and information on dental care, health, nutrition and safe routes to school to local families.

"McDonald's Backpack Saturday is certain to be the largest event of its kind in Arizona and we're excited to provide free backpacks and community resources to thousands of Arizona families," said Travis Heriaud, a Phoenix McDonald's owner. "We believe this community outreach event will enrich our customers' lives and help our local families prepare for the upcoming school year."
