Auntie Anne's tests whole wheat pretzels

January 27, 2012

Earlier this month, Auntie Anne's began testing new whole grain pretzel products in select markets across the U.S. as part of its mission to appeal to guests looking to consume more whole grains.

The limited-time Honey Whole Wheat Pretzels and Apple Caramel Pretzel Stix have received the Whole Grains Council stamp of approval.

The Honey Whole Wheat Pretzel, offered until April 7, is made with whole grain dough and contains six grams of fiber. Auntie Anne's is currently testing the new pretzel at 32 franchised store locations in Seattle, Indianapolis, and in select Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware locations. The average price point is $2.79.

The warm Apple Caramel Pretzel Stix combine two classic American flavors – apple and caramel. The product also is made with whole grain dough and will be tested until April 7 in 32 select franchised store locations in Missouri, Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Illinois. The average price point is $3.09.

The product tests are in response to an increasing demand for healthier menu options. According to the Mintel Global New Products Database, new whole grain products rose 1,995 percent since 2000.

"With 65 percent of adults looking to add more whole grain products into their diets, Auntie Anne's is working to meet our guests' request with a treat that gives them the great taste they expect from Auntie Anne's," said Carl Hornberger, Auntie Anne's director of Menu Management. "At Auntie Anne's, we only serve great tasting pretzels, and we believe the Honey Whole Wheat Pretzels and Apple Caramel Pretzel Stix will become a popular treat for the uncompromising whole grain snacker."
