In 2018, restaurant success is a four-letter word: H-I-R-E

June 6, 2018

It's all about the hire...and keeping the hire. This according to point of sale and management system company, Toast, in its report on what operators say is most important to restaurant success this year.

A news release said the study identifies hiring, training and retaining staff as top industry challenges now, with nearly 60 percent of restaurateurs naming those as top "opportunity" areas for foodservice.

The release also said the report finds increasing speed and efficiency, as well as attracting and retaining customers, are the second and third most crucial challenges, respectively.

"Our research into the key drivers of restaurant success found that top restaurateurs are often more focused than their peers on optimizing their business for performance," Toast co-founder and President Aman Narang said in the release.

Other report findings include:

  • 89 percent of restaurateurs report optimism around sales this year.
  • 63 percent advertise on social media, down from 75 percent last year.
  • 47 percent say they schedule employees to work fewer weekly hours

Eight hundred forty four restaurant owners, managers and leaders completed the report survey in March and April, with 54 percent from casual brands, 21 percent from QSRs, 14 percent fine dining, seven percent bakeries and four percent bars/nightclubs.
