Krispy Kreme plans healthier menu items

June 19, 2011

The research and development team at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has been very busy of late. The company recently announced it would launch a new coffee line in the fall, as well as an extended Baked Creations menu.

Also, according to Bloomberg Businessweek, the famous glazed doughnut shop is about to embrace a healthier side – with plans to add oatmeal, yogurt and fruit juice.

Chief Executive Officer James Morgan said such options are needed to compete and to keep the company's momentum. Krispy Kreme recently posted its best quarterly profit since 2004.

The chain will maintain its signature sweets and is currently testing doughnut shakes in certain markets. It also just rolled out Oreo Cookies & Kreme doughnuts and drinks.

Second South Carolina shop opens Tuesday

On Tuesday, Krispy Kreme will open its second Neighborhood Shop in Columbia, S.C.

The 2,000-square-foot shop will include a drive-thru and feature Krispy Kreme's signature offerings, including its signature hot Original Glazed doughnuts. It will also offer Krispy Kreme's Kool Kreme soft serve menu of traditional cones, shakes and specialty doughnut sundaes.

"We are truly excited about expanding our presence in the Columbia, S.C. market," said Cindy Bay, senior vice president of company store operations for Krispy Kreme. "Columbia brands itself as the 'Famously Hot' city. And Krispy Kreme's Hot Original Glazed Doughnuts are world famous. Columbia and Krispy Kreme make a perfect pairing."

The grand opening event will be covered live on Twitter @KrispyKreme. Guests are invited to share their posts and photos from the event using #KrispyKremeLive throughout the day.
