Scotland considers QSR commercial ban

March 20, 2012

The Scottish Government is mulling a decision to ban commercials for products high in fat, sugar and salt during primetime TV, before 9 p.m.

According to the Daily Record, the ads – which include those for QSR brands – are already banned during children's TV programming. Scottish officials want to extend those hours to avoid influencing children/teens during popular shows such as The X Factor.

Westminster Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has been urged to introduce a ban across the United Kingdom. If he refuses, the Scottish Government will still keep the idea on the table in Scotland.

Products targeted include burgers, french fries and chicken nuggets. The ban would affect companies such as McDonald's and KFC, in addition to Mars and Cadbury, who combined spend up to £200 million ($265 million U.S.) a year in advertising in the UK.

The measure has been applauded by health professionals; however, the UK government said the advertising only has a "modest" impact on children's eating decisions.
