Study: Hispanic signatures overtake burgers on American dinner tables

October 18, 2013

The U.S. Census suggests the Hispanic population will grow 34 percent by 2020 and the trend is heavily influencing the foodservice industry. According to new research published by the Daily Mail, tortillas now outsell burger buns and hot dog buns in the U.S.

The research also shows that Americans consider Hispanic staples "American." For example, salsa is now the top-selling condiment, passing ketchup.

Jim Kabbani, CEO of the Tortilla Industry Association, told the Daily Mail that this trend is similar to the integration of Italian food into U.S. culture years ago.

In 2012, Hispanic foods and beverages were an $8 billion market in the U.S., according to consumer research firm Packaged Facts. The industry is expected to reach $11 billion by 2017.
