Uber has agreed to acquire workplace catering platform ezCater in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.3 billion, a move that will expand Uber Eats deeper into the catering and group-ordering business, the company announced in a press release.

Boston-based ezCater helps businesses manage workplace meals, meetings, events and recurring catering needs, connecting customers with more than 140,000 restaurants nationwide. The platform also offers tools for managing orders and food spending, along with 24/7 customer support.

The acquisition will combine ezCater's catering and B2B expertise with Uber Eats' consumer and restaurant network and Uber for Business' relationships with organizations. For restaurant operators, Uber said the combination is designed to generate more large, high-value catering orders while introducing their brands to new customers.

"Catering is a big business, and can be a huge revenue stream for restaurants," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in the release. "Nihad and his incredible team have built an amazing platform. With Uber's reach, we can bring that experience to millions more customers and help restaurants win more of these valuable orders."

The deal gives Uber a foothold in a business where individual transactions can be significantly larger than traditional delivery orders. ezCater generated more than $2.5 billion in gross bookings during the trailing 12 months, growing in the high teens year over year. Its average order value exceeds $400, according to the companies.

ezCater CEO Nihad Rahman added that ezCater plans to bring its catering and B2B expertise to Uber's broader network of customers, merchants and couriers.
