Subway jumps into mobile payments space

Mobile payments provider Paydiant today announced that it has been selected by the Subway restaurant chain to power a variety of mobile wallet capabilities in the upcoming release of the chain's new mobile application. According to a news release, the solution will begin rolling out to stores later this year.

Paydiant's cloud-based, white-label approach to the mobile wallet allows retailers to add capabilities such as payments, offers and loyalty programs into their own branded apps. Paydiant's white label platform also works with existing smartphones and integrates into existing POS systems.

"Paydiant offers the mobile platform that makes the most sense for our franchisees and our customers," said Carman Wenkoff, chief information officer for Subway. "Their mobile capabilities will be a key factor towards providing our customers with innovative services and an exceptional experience."

Subway is the latest QSR to jump into the mobile payments space within the past couple of months. Taco John's, Sonic and Dairy Queen have all recently announced new mobile initiatives. It was also reported last month that McDonald's is currently testing a mobile payments platform in its Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas, markets.

By restaurant count, Subway is the largest restaurant chain in the world. Domestically, there are close to 26,000 Subway restaurants.
