Once again, Taco Bell has taken to its social media channels to tease us about its next Doritos Locos launch, coming Aug. 22.
The conversation, using #DLT, is taking place today on Facebook, Vine, Twitter and Instagram, where the brand posted a video that stopped just short of a full product reveal.
Taco Bell also went on a full PR blast to prepare for the next iteration of its most successful product line ever, one that started in March 2012 with Nacho Cheese, and continued in March '13 with the Cool Ranch rollout.
As part of that PR blast, members of the media received boxes full of Doritos; big boxes and all kinds of Doritos – 10 different flavors to be exact. The packaging included the message: "# _____ DLT (Post your guess. Use the bags to fill in the blank)."
So, here we are, munching our way through lunchtime and trying to figure out what the next Taco Bell Doritos Taco flavor will be:
Our guess is Flamas, which has been spotted in test in some markets. This launch would also complement Taco Bell's early-summer social media teaser which featured "New DLT" spelled out in fire ("flamas" translates to "flames").
Of course, we'll find out soon enough. And then we'll watch to see if this third version will be as successful as the two before it.
And then we'll reference that list of 10 different chip flavors (and perhaps the additional 113 Doritos flavors that exist) and wonder if Taco Bell and Frito Lay will continue rolling out Locos Tacos iterations.
It would be an ambitious pipeline, to be sure. But after selling 100 million Doritos Locos Tacos in just 10 weeks, Taco Bell could certainly pull it off.
