A&W promo taps into Academy Awards popularity

In 23 days, this year's Academy Awards will take place in Tinseltown, but A&W is using the annual movie-centric event to kick up a little stardust of its own.

The chain has launched a social media-focused campaign running all month, aptly dubbed the #AWcademyAwards Sweepstakes, according to a news release. To compete, the brand's social media followers post their own fast food-based renditions of everything from movie titles to nominees' names and movie poster parodies. Players have already dubbed stars like Reese Witherspoon to be Reeses Withaspoon, and the brand's mascot, Rooty, is starring in his own movie poster.

"We know that many social media users love movies," Marketing Vice President Sarah Blasi said in a news release. "This online giveaway and live-tweet will be buzz-worthy and a fun way to involve our current and new fans in an event that’s sure to be a trending topic,"

A&W will randomly award 20 weekly prizes to fans on its social channels with gift checks, mini mugs, orange bow ties and other prizes, with a tweet-along on Feb. 26 during the awards.
