A&W taps into social media users' movie mania for 2nd year

A&W Restaurants is having some fun with the Academy Awards again this year following the last year's #AWcademyAwards Sweepstakes. This rendition on the star-studded Hollywood affair will give customers the chance to share spoof movie posters, vote on their choices for a food-ified version of the Oscars with awards for things like "Best Supporting Side," and even give their own "movie reviews" on social media for prizes, a news release said. 

Awards run the gamut in this "AWcademy Awards" including everything from the chain's "Bear Bucks" to limited-edition posters and movie gift certificates. A live tweet chat of the real thing on Sunday, March 4,  rounds out the campaign.It starts at 8 p.m. EST.

"This was our second most popular online promotion last year," A&W Digital Manager Liz Bazner, said in the release. "We developed more content than we were able to use and feel confident that we can bring this back annually. ... Last year's #AWcademyAwards promotion proved so successful because many social media users love movies." 

A&W has created parody movie posters for such "blockbusters" as "Shakes on a Plane," "Fantastic Feasts and Where to Find Them" and "Mean Swirls" for film enthusiasts to share online.
