Jack in the Box confirms shipment of potential Cyclospora-contaminated lettuce

As the investigation into the Cyclospora outbreak continues and more details emerge about potential contaminated shipments of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce, Jack in the Box issued a statement Sunday, July 19, regarding a shipment it received through a Texas distribution center.

The statement reads:

"The safety of our guests is our top priority. At this time, there have been no known illnesses associated with food served at Jack in the Box in connection with the FDA's ongoing investigation of Taylor Farms lettuce. Jack in the Box restaurants that potentially received affected lettuce were those supplied through our Texas distribution centers, which service restaurants across Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. As soon as we learned of the potential issue on Thursday, we immediately notified restaurants to remove lettuce while we transition to a new supply. We worked with our suppliers to quickly replace it with product from an unaffected supply at an alternate domestic facility. We know this may be an inconvenience, and we appreciate our guests' patience. Food safety has been a core priority at Jack in the Box for more than 30 years. We continue to maintain rigorous food safety practices designed to help ensure our guests can enjoy their favorite meals with confidence. We will continue to closely monitor updates from public health authorities and our suppliers and will share additional information as it becomes available."

Jack in the Box and Taco Bell — and also Walmart — have been linked to receiving shipments of the iceburg lettuce, with Taco Bell pulling the lettuce from it's supply earlier this month due to an outbreak link across five Midwestern states: Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Indiana.

So far, media reports have said the CDC has identified more than 11,500 cases of cyclospora in the U.S. with 4,173 confirmed cases and an estimated additional 7,400 ones still undergoing laboratory testing and analysis.

As of July 22, Michigan has reported 7,171 confirmed cases, according to the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. Overall, 41 states have reported at least one case as of July 22, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far, Taylor Farms has recalled iceburg lettuce shipped to 27 states between between June 29 and July 16, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
