McDonald's Canada testing mobile payments

April 4, 2013

The fast-growing mobile payment technology has made its way to the Golden Arches. According to Mobile Entertainment, the Interact Association has partnered with RBC Royal Bank to integrate tap-to-pay functionality into BlackBerry devices via an app. An NFC payments test is now taking place at a McDonald's restaurant in Canada.

The Interac Association provides access to funds at more than 760,000 point-of-sales terminals throughout Canada. Its contactless solution has been added to select debit cards to offer the payment function. Customers then pay for their food by tapping Interac Flash readers at the POS.

Interac claims this is Canada's first and only contactless debit payment for mobile. In November, Tim Hortons introduced its Interac Flash-enabled terminals and plans a broader rollout throughout this year.

Dave Hederson, SVP & CFO, McDonald's Restaurants of Canada, told Mobile Entertainment: "We're pleased to offer our customers new and convenient payment options like mobile Interac Flash. As our customers' purchasing needs and preferences continue to evolve, we are committed to providing them with relevant ways to interact with us as their favorite place to eat and drink."
