No Secret Recipe, no KFC: Fiji units close

August 8, 2011

Three KFC outlets in Fiji have permanently closed after they ran out of key ingredients in Colonel Sanders' Secret Recipe that have been quarantined since October 2010.

Among the ingredients unable to pass inspections were breadcrumbs and a milk/egg mix.

According to Scoop, Fiji's food safety agency held the ingredients up in inspection to ensure they were disease-free. But there are two sides to the story. The Agriculture Department insists no products were banned and the company is using this story to cover up slumping sales.

KFC, however, said it has been unable to import the ingredients since last year, which compromised the product and led to decreasing sales.

The outlets – two in Suva and one in Nadi – had closed temporarily to await the importation after running out of ingredients.

KFC first opened in Fiji 10 years ago and has been importing ingredients since. The closures affect about 80 employees.
