Whataburger adds healthier menu options

November 6, 2011

Starting Nov. 7, Whataburger will become the latest QSR to add apple slices to its kids' meals as a substitute for french fries. The apple slices will be included at no extra cost, and contain 90-percent fewer calories.

The two-ounce portion of apple slices also is available for adults looking to cut calories and fat or add a serving of fruit to their daily diet. The 30-calorie apple slice side can be substituted for fries in Whatameals 1 through 8 at no charge, or for hash browns in Breakfast Whatameals for a small charge. They also can be purchased a la carte for a snack or breakfast on the go.

"We want to accommodate the variety in our customers' dietary needs with a wide array of options," said Rich Scheffler, Whataburger Restaurants LP, group director of Marketing.

Customers can now choose a healthier sandwich, too, with Whataburger's new whole-grain wheat bun. The new bun will come standard with Whataburger's Grilled Chicken Sandwich. Guests can substitute the new bun on any Whataburger, Whatacatch, Whatachick'n or Breakfast on a Bun sandwich at no extra charge.

Healthier kids' meal trend

Apple slices have been making their way into many kids' meals this year, including at McDonald'sArby's and Jack in the Box.

Burger King was one of the first chains to sign up as a partner for the National Restaurant Association/Healthy Dining's Kids LiveWell initiative that provides parents and children with healthier food and beverage selections when dining out.

And earlier this summer, Popeyes launched its Get Up & Geaux Kids Meal, with two naked tenders, applesauce, a toasted baguette roll and a zero calorie drink.
